Rubber Coupling
A rubber coupling is a mechanical part that acts as a bridge between the two shafts of machines to transfer power to different machine ends. These machines are commonly found in factories and used to speed up a company’s production, so the coupling to be placed must be durable and made from high-grade raw materials to extend its lifespan. Technically, its primary function is to transfer power from one machine to another’s end, but it depends on what type and where it will be used. It is just one of the many other coupling purposes found on the market, and here are the different purposes:
- It is the primary protection for the two machines and will extend their lifespan.
- For connecting two different devices to increase production
- To reduce vibrations and shock loads emanating from rotating machines.
- The machines will be more flexible and can provide an excellent tolerance to misalignments and other rotational movements.
Different Types of Rubber Coupling
A flexible rubber coupling is a mechanical device connecting two shafts while allowing for misalignment. The coupling consists of two hubs with a rubber sleeve in between them. The hubs are connected to the shafts using bolts or set screws. The flexibility of the rubber sleeve allows the coupling to accommodate misalignment while still transferring the torque from one shaft to the other.
There are many advantages to using a flexible coupling over a rigid coupling. First, the flexibility of the rubber sleeve allows for a certain amount of misalignment between the two shafts, which can be beneficial if the alignment is imperfect. Second, the flexibility of the rubber sleeve also absorbs vibrations, which can extend the life of the connected shafts and equipment.
Diaphragm rubber coupling – a fluid coupling that uses a flexible diaphragm to connect two shafts. The diaphragm is held in place by a metal or plastic ring. The flexibility of the diaphragm allows for misalignment between the shafts, and the coupling can also accommodate small amounts of axial and radial movement. These couplings are typically used in applications requiring high torque capacity or vibration dampings, such as pumps, compressors, and fans.
Disc rubber coupling – is a type of elastomeric coupling used to connect two shafts while providing vibration isolation. It consists of two hubs with a disc of rubber in between them. The advantages of disc coupling over other collars are its flexibility and ability to absorb shock and vibrations. Disc couplings are used in various automotive, aerospace, and military applications.
- In the automotive industry, they are often used to connect the engine to the transmission.
- In aerospace applications, they are used to connect the wings to the fuselage.
- In military applications, they are used to connect tanks and other vehicles.
Rigid rubber coupling – is used in various applications where flexibility and vibration isolation are desired. These couplings are designed to connect two shafts while allowing for some misalignment. Rigid couplings are natural or synthetic rubber, have metal inserts for strength, and can be used with rotating and non-rotating equipment.
Beam rubber coupling is used to connect two pieces of equipment or piping. It is made of two beams, each with a flange at one end connected to the other beam with bolts. The other end of each beam has a rubber ring that fits over the other beam. This provides a flexible connection that can absorb vibration and misalignment.
Donut-type rubber coupling – this type of pipe fitting is used to connect two pipes. It is made of a rubber ring shaped like a donut, with two metal flanges on either side. The donut coupling is inserted into the ends of the two pipes and then bolted together. This type of rubber coupling is often used in applications requiring flexibility, such as in piping systems subject to thermal expansion or contraction.
